Level 1

Beginner

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases to satisfy concrete needs. Can introduce him/herself and hold a simple conversation as long as the speaker talks slowly, clearly and with basic vocabulary.

Students enter level 1 with a limited ability to read and write in English; they function in the use of English in a very limited way, speaking English in situations related to their immediate needs. By the end of this course, students will be able to function at the workplace and in the community in a limited way to meet immediate needs. They will be able to handle routine situations that involve basic oral communication skills on a nontechnical level and in which all tasks can be demonstrated.

Level 2

Elementary English

Can understand sentences and common expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (family, local personal information). Can describe in simple terms own background and immediate environment and needs.

Students placed in this class are at a Low Intermediate level of English proficiency. Students concentrate on incorporating basic grammar into writing, reading, and speaking about personal experiences as well as newly acquired information. Students who successfully complete this course should be able to speak and understand conversational English that is relevant to routine tasks and their immediate environment. They can understand high frequency vocabulary and use it to independently read and write paragraphs about familiar subjects.

Level 3

Intermediate English

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar subjects about work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations that arise while traveling, dealing with family or personal interests. Can describe experiences, events, dreams and give brief reasons and explanations for opinions or plans.

This course develops students' functional language to include academic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Learners work to acquire academic vocabulary, develop academic listening skills and effective note-taking, accessing more written input and participating in academic discussions and presentations. Students can use English to function with most life situations as well as provide basic reasons, support and explanation to support their opinions and views in an academic setting.

Level 4

Upper Intermediate

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain their viewpoints on issues while considering both sides.

Students placed in this class are at an upper-intermediate level of English proficiency. They concentrate on incorporating academic writing to
accompany integration and expression of more advanced reading, speaking, and listening skills. Students can interact (with native speakers) with a level of fluency and spontaneity on a variety of subjects without strain. Those who successfully complete this level should not only be able to prepare for the TOEFL but also have the English skills necessary to begin studies in a college/university or professional setting.

TOEFL PREPARATION

Advanced English

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meanings. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects showing a controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Students placed in this class are at an Advanced level of English proficiency. Students prepare for academic study at a university by practicing academic skills: listening to lectures and taking notes, college writing, conversation, and academic reading. Students who successfully
complete this course should not only be able to pass the TOEFL but also have the English skills necessary to succeed in a college/university.
Successful completion of this course requires a score of at least 17 on each section (a total of 68 on all 4 sections).

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

Proficiency

Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarize information from different spoken and written  sources, reconstruction arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, fluently and precisely while differentiating finer shades of meaning in even more complex situations. 

Students at this level will use English flexibly and effectively in social, academic and professional settings without hesitation. They are able to
express themselves, their goals, intentions and clarify meaning with a degree of fluency that does not distract from purpose. Students in this
course can understand with ease virtually everything they hear or read in English while even differentiating finer shades of meaning in more complex situations. Students pass this course by scoring above 90% on the TOEIC which indicates that they can handle any English needs in their occupations.
